Effective Communication During Open Enrollment

Written by Susan Riffle on Wednesday, 16 June 2010 15:26

How can your organization overcome the most common enrollment hurdles?

Studies show that organizations with ineffective communications have employees with a low understanding of, and appreciation for, the benefits package. In addition, health care reform changes have caused confusion and misinformation among employees. With Open Enrollment planning underway for most organizations, now is the time to consider communicating key messages with your employees.

Open Enrollment is the right time to communicate any benefit plan changes to employees. To prepare, you should develop an advance communication plan that includes objectives, key messages, audiences, channels, and a timeline to communicate 2011 plan year changes. Key messages to include are:

  • New requirement of dependent coverage through age 26;
  • Coverage changes to preventive benefits;
  • Elimination of annual or lifetime limits;
  • Elimination of reimbursement for over-the-counter drugs through an HSA, HRA, or FSA (unless prescribed by an authorized medical professional);
  • Increase in the HSA excise tax on non-qualified medical expenses; and
  • The CLASS Act, which provides long-term care insurance to employees through automatic enrollment.
