Pension relief was passed via the MAP-21 Act, signed by President Obama on July 6, 2012. The highway funding and student loan law includes several changes to funding rules for defined benefit plan sponsors, the most favorable of which is an opportunity to lower minimum required contributions. In addition, the multi-billion dollar settlements announced by Ford and GM have ignited a discussion of de-risking strategies for pension plans.
